Peter OHalloran can rightly claim to be NZ’s most experienced and successful Lean Sensei (Sensay).
• 1971, Peter began working with Toyota NZ as Engineering Manager, when TNZ commenced operations.
• 1984, Peter was one of the very first group of Westerners sent to live in Toyota City, Japan for intensive in-house training on the Toyota Production System. This was followed by 2 years hands on tutelage from the guys who invented TPS (Lean), while implementing TPS at Toyota NZ. TPS totally transformed Toyota NZ’s business, and this was the very first introduction of Lean Thinking in New Zealand.
• 1986, Toyota sent Peter to Toyota Motor Corporation Australia in Melbourne, initially working as Manufacturing Manager of the small stampings and metal fabrication shops, then Paint Shop Manager. Since leaving TMCA Peter has continued to visit most years, as a welcome guest.
• 1991, Peter changed to White goods manufacturing, and was appointed as Manager of Email Christchurch, (now Electrolux) to implement TPS.
• 1993, Email transferred Peter to Adelaide as General Manager of their huge White goods operation in Dudley Park, which employed as many as 1000 staff.
• 2001, Peter founded his own Lean coaching business, “Simply Lean” which became very successful.
• June 2009 he sold his company “Simply Lean Business Solutions” to two of his Trainees.
Peter has personally introduced Lean Thinking into almost 100 entirely different organizations in NZ and Australia and believes around 80% have had some degree of success. Perfection is of course the goal of TPS, and although we all know perfection is not actually attainable, it still remains the goal.
